The election of Betsy DeVos to the role of Secretary of Education was an appointment I applauded as a choice designed to create a much more innovative and forward-thinking way of exploring the future of the U.S. public school system. I was recently reading an interview with Betsy DeVos in Philanthropy Roundtable which showed her skills as an education reformer but also explained much of the work completed by her husband, Dick DeVos as a public servant, philanthropist, and business leader. Dick DeVos has been a major figure in the growth of the AmWay Group business established by his father, Richard in the middle of the 20th-century since the 1980s but still found the time to become an integral part of the rising success following his election to the Michigan Board of Education; Dick impressed me with his dedication to the cause of education reform which has been an ongoing fight across the state for the DeVos family.
I believe Dick DeVos has shown himself to be one of the most important and successful philanthropists in the history of Michigan with his regular donations to good causes and a continuing move towards achieving as much as possible in the local community. After completing a major upgrade to the structure of the AmWay Group I was happy to see the philanthropist remain an active member of the community in Grand Rapids, Michigan after amassing a personal fortune ranking him as a billionaire.
The Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation reports the couple has made a move towards fighting for the moral values of the nation after becoming involved with the Willow Creek Association; the group hopes to bring Christian values back to the American community and develop a range of programs for assisting the changing face of society in the U.S. in retaining many of the traditional values the nation is best known for.
Unlike many individuals who retire from their position as Dick DeVos did in 2002, the former candidate for Michigan Governor has not simply looked for an easy passage through life. I was happy to see Dick DeVos was looking to continue his efforts in both the philanthropic and business world across recent years as he worked with his own investment company, The Windquest Group to seek out new opportunities including green energy and not for profit solutions.
