Guilherme Paulus’s road to becoming known as the ‘Most Powerful Man in Brazilian Tourism’ started when he was working as a travel agent in Casa Faro Turismo in 1971. An experience he had with some French tourists in Brazil, looking to find something interesting to do opened his eyes at an opportunity of a lifetime and a need that was left unsatisfied with tourists who visited Brazil – A tour operator that would help its customers pack their entire stay with the kind of excitement or relaxation they sought.
In 1972, Guilherme Paulus would co-found CVC Brasil Operadora e Agencia de Viagens S.A. with Carlos Vicente Cerchiari, a Brazilian politician who would later pull out of the venture.
This would make Guilherme Paulus the unquestioned leader of CVC, then a small tour operator based out of Santo Andre. Choosing to not see it as a predicament, but as an opportunity, Guilherme Paulus would spend the next four decades taking CVC into the global arena and growing it from one store in Santo Andre to over 400 malls, 140 hypermarkets, and many more locations all over the country.
He would sell 63.6% of CVC to Carlyle Group, a global private equity company for $420 million. The new investment would allow CVC to truly take off to the next level. Visit mercadoeeventos.com to know more.
Guilherme would not keep his business acumen to just CVC, he would buy WebJet, a struggling airliner which only had one aircraft in its fleet before turning it into the 3rd largest domestic airline in Brazil with a fleet of 20 aircraft in just five years before selling it to Gol.
His magic touch would come into play again as he founded GJP Group of Hotels and Resorts, a group that has now grown to have hotels and resorts across Brazil, employing over 2,000 people.
His work in the field of tourism wouldn’t go unnoticed as he is the recipient of over 200 awards by foreign governments like the French, the United States, and Mexico for the promotion of tourism as well as awards from Brazilian news agencies like the ‘Entreprenuer of The Year Award in the Tourism Sector’ by the Isto E Dinheiro magazine in 2017.
His expertise has made Guilherme Paulus an integral part of the Tourism Board under the Brazilian Government and is the newest venture – GJP Constructions is creating condominiums and villas for a new generation of the Brazilian population that is demanding a higher standard of living.
