When Joe Arpaio, the former sheriff of Maricopa County was convicted in 2017 for going against court orders which needed him to stop harassment of immigrants in Maricopa County, many victims of his aggression thought that finally he would face justices and be punished for the actions he took when he was the sheriff.

Joe Arpaio was the sheriff of Maricopa County for 24 years after he won the set back to back for six terms. He was a popular sheriff not only in Arizona but the whole of the United States. He was known as Americas Toughest Man. He did not tolerate anything to do with illegal immigration in his county. He became very popular when Donald Trump started a birther movement against the president of the United States back then- President Obama. Joe Arpaio was among the vocal supporters of the movement. The movement claimed that the former president was born outside the United States. The move by the sheriff seems to have paid off as Trump has pardoned him now.

Joe Arpaio was found guilty of the charges facing him in July and was slotted to be sentenced in October 2017. Earlier his opponents had celebrated when he lost the seat of the sheriff.

They finally saw the end of the road for the former sheriff. It was clear that he would no longer use his office to hamper investigations into his conduct as a sheriff. In the course of implementing his duties as a sheriff, he hurt so many people that his time in office is described as one of the worst experiences in modern history.

Many victims of his atrocities were looking forward to seeing him facing a long jail term. Unfortunately, the hopes of all these people were shattered by president Trump. The president took a step that can only be described as nepotism. He pardoned Arpaio because of the support he received from the former sheriff when he was vying for the seat of the president. The decision to pardon Arpaio could also have been reached as a result of Trump’s agenda on immigration. Both of them do not believe in the importance of immigration, they advocate for the use of crude force in stopping the further migration of the people into the united states.

Trump before and after the elections has been advocating for a total shut down of immigrants from some countries. He had particularly singled out the Latinos in his campaigns. He had promised to build a wall that would separate the United States and Mexico.

Among the people who were disappointed by the step taken by the president were Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. The two veteran journalists had used a lot of time highlighting the illegalities committed by the sheriff. He even ordered for their arrest in 2007 as a result of the concerted efforts they had displayed exposing his illegal activities.

Lacey and Larkin knew him so well after spending a long time following his illegal activities. However, even after the pardon of Arpaio, they are committed to going on with the fight for better treatment of immigrants.
